Diesel Bills Blow Past School Budgets, Putting Sports and Field Trips at Risk
Key Takeaways
- A joint survey of 188 school districts by the School Superintendents Association, ASBO International, and the National Association for Pupil Transportation examined how record diesel prices affect operations.
- 22% of responding districts said actual diesel costs ran 11-20% over budget, 20% said 6-10% over, and 14% said more than 20% over.
- 63% are absorbing overruns in existing transportation budgets, 32% are transferring funds from other programs, 19% are using reserves, and 15% have not covered the gap.
- Districts are weighing cuts to field trips, sports and band, and have reduced routes and stops, pushing some students to walk farther to bus stops.
