In-Body Networking Could Let Wearables and Implants Work as One
Key Takeaways
- Science (Vol. 393, Issue 6818, pp. 1322–1328) publishes work on an in-body networking system for communication between wearable and implantable therapeutics.
- Current architectures typically route implant and wearable data outward to external hubs or the cloud, adding latency and dependence on patient-carried relays.
- Tissue attenuation, body movement and individual anatomy make in-body signalling far harder than free-space radio links.
- Power and thermal limits force asymmetric designs, with external wearables carrying more of the communications burden than implanted nodes.
