A report highlighted by Mashable says a news site called The Wire by Acutus appears to rely almost entirely on AI-generated content while presenting itself as an editorial publication. The allegation lands at the intersection of automation, media credibility, and political influence, making it more consequential than a routine debate about whether AI can help write articles.
According to the report from The Midas Project’s Model Republic publication, The Wire by Acutus has been operating since late 2025 and has published nearly 100 stories spanning technology, energy, media, science, business, and healthcare. But the site reportedly lacks a masthead and does not credit editors or journalists on its articles, despite describing its work as collaborative journalism led by an editorial team.
That gap between presentation and attribution is at the heart of the controversy. In digital publishing, readers have long relied on visible authorship, editorial accountability, and institutional transparency as basic signals of trust. A site that mimics the structure of a news outlet without clearly identifying who is responsible for its reporting invites immediate scrutiny.
The report’s main claim: the output looks overwhelmingly machine-written
Mashable cites journalist Tyler Johnston, who ran the site’s content through Pangram, an AI detection tool. Johnston found that 69 percent of 94 articles were flagged as fully AI-generated and another 28 percent as partially AI-generated. Only three articles were classified as human-authored.
Those figures, if accurate, do more than suggest heavy automation. They imply a publication workflow in which human journalism may be the exception rather than the rule.
The concern is amplified by the way the site describes its process. Mashable notes that The Wire says its editorial team identifies timely topics and invites contributors with relevant firsthand experience to share perspectives through structured conversations, with those perspectives then synthesized and edited into stories. Johnston’s concerns reportedly grew when he examined the tone of the site’s coverage. Mashable says the content was strongly favorable to AI development and dismissive of AI critics, citing headlines such as one warning of escalating anti-AI radicalism and another asking whether Republicans will let blue states set America’s AI rules.
That matters because the story is not simply about automation in publishing. It is also about whether an AI-generated outlet can act as a message-amplification vehicle in live policy fights while wearing the outward appearance of journalism.
Mashable further reports that half of the site’s engagement on X came from Patrick Hynes, president of the PR firm Novus Public Affairs. A look at the firm’s client list, the article says, shows work on behalf of Targeted Victory, which Mashable describes as being central to OpenAI’s lobbying efforts in Washington on regulatory matters.
The article stops short of claiming direct editorial control by OpenAI, and that distinction is important. The problem is that news credibility does not rest on output volume alone. It depends on accountability for sourcing, fact selection, framing, and correction. Readers need to know who made the calls, what process was followed, and whether a publication is reporting independently or promoting a line.
When a site appears to minimize or obscure the role of automation while invoking the legitimacy of journalism, it threatens more than its own reputation. It contributes to a wider erosion of trust in digital information environments that are already crowded with synthetic content, weak attribution, and strategic messaging.
Why disclosure is becoming the central issue
There is no simple boundary between acceptable and unacceptable use of AI in media. Many publishers already use AI tools in narrow, disclosed ways. The harder question is what readers are owed when automation becomes structurally central to the final product.
The reporting described by Mashable points toward a standard that may soon become unavoidable: if a publication is largely machine-generated, that fact should not be hidden behind vague institutional language about teams, contributors, or editorial synthesis.
